Greek motor ship "Peltastis" sunk
on January 8 th 1968. at 4.30 am on location between Silo and
Klimno on island Krk. On January 4 th ship came in Rijeka from
Venice. In Rijeka ship disembarked 500 tons of ore and 60 tons
of other ship cargo. Than ship left Rijeka port and went in
Jurjevo port (small port near Senj). During morning ship embarked
500 cubic metre of wood. Soon after embarkation weather got
worse. Captain of ship decided to leave unsafe port of Jurjevo
and ship routed to Crikvenica. Soon "Peltastis" came near Crikvenica
and dropped anchors. Captain of the ship hoped that with dropped
anchors and working engines would overcame storm and strong
wind. But, during the night wind became stronger and sea restless
with high waves. Two hours before sinking started hurricane
and ship easily began to sail toward rocks of island Krk. Strength
of the wind was about 200 kilometer on hour. Seem that main
problem was in anchors because crew of ship probably did not
know that bottom of the crikvenica bay is full of sand. Anchors
had not something to hook. So after two hours of battle with
strong wind and high waves "Peltastis" hit the rocks between
Silo and Klimno. On Peltastis were 12 sailors. Soon after impact
sailors jumped into the sea but only 4 survived. Captain of
the ship Theodoros Belesis decided to sunk with ship. After
few months first divers from Crikvenica visited the ship. They
noticed a man in navigation room, body was in upright position
slightly keeld ahead. Captain of the ship was taken out the
sea 10 months after sinking. He is buried in cemetery Kozala
(Rijeka). First plans were to take out the ship but soon authority
gave up of this idea and left "Peltastis" forever only to divers. |
